King Sago Palms
Welcome to King Sago
Palms.com, your
one-stop location on the Internet for information related to
the popular and beautiful king sago palm.
The king sago palm (cycas revoluta) is one of
the most popular ornamental plants , as well as one of the
most primitive living seed plants in the world. Although
referred to as a palm, king sagos are actually related to
conifer and ginkgo trees.
King sagos have changed very little in the
past 200 million years. Fossils of the plant have been found
throughout the world, but are believed to have originated in
the Far East. Most experts agree that the king sago dates back
to the Mesozoic era.
King sagos have erect, sturdy trunks that are
typically between one to twelve inches in diameter, and older
plants have been known to grow as tall as twenty feet in
height. The leaves of the plant are dark olive green and are
three to four feet long. Plants grown indoors or in the shade
can have even longer leaves.
King sagos are very hearty.
Although they are a subtropical plant that can thrive in
temperatures as high as 110 degrees F /42 degrees C, they
are also capable of adapting to temperatures as low as 15
degrees F/-11 degrees C. Many king sagos have been
known to live more than 100 years and it is not
completely uncommon for a king sago to live more than 200
years. One king sago at the Royal Botanic
Garden in England has been documented to be more than 220
years old.
