Growing from an Offset
Offsets or “pups”
which grow at the base or along the sides of mature king
sago palms are a very good source of growing new
plants.

To grow a king
sago palm from an offset:
-
Remove
offsets in early spring or late
fall
-
Use a
hand trowel to remove small offsets from the
side of the trunk or a sharp shovel if the
offset is at the base of the
plant.
-
Remove
all leaves and roots from the offset and allow
the offset to dry for a week before
planting.
-
Plant
offset in well-drained soil with half the ball
or trunk below soil level.
-
Water
thoroughly.
Allow the soil
to become almost dry before
watering.
-
It is
recommended that offsets be started in a shady
area outdoors or a brightly lit indoor
area.
-
Roots will begin to form
immediately, but it may take several months
for the first leaves to
appear.
-
When
leaves appear, apply a mild dose of fertilizer
and water when the soil is almost
dry.
-
Do not
repot or move to a garden until the root
system has established itself.
